Swedish university to test HIV drug
Scientists at Sweden's Goteborg University have developed a new drug for testing in the treatment of HIV infection.

The drug, named alphaHGA, is scheduled to begin tests on human patients this year. The scientists said a compound called GPG-NH2 was found to inhibit HIV in culture.

"GPG-NH2 inhibited the virus by a new mechanism of action. The molecule prevented the virus from forming the correct structure, and was therefore active against HIV resistant to currently available drugs" said researcher Elin Andersson.

GPG-NH2 degrades to alphaHGA using two enzymes present in the medium used in the viral cultures.
